For cultures with a cell density greater than 1.0 × 107 cells ml-1 a 10-fold dilution in BSK-II was made prior to loading in the counting chamber.
Each growth curve is representative of multiple independent trials, as data could not be pooled due to the length of experiments and the different times at which bacteria were enumerated.
